The digidestined start off by finding a part of Etemon's Dark Network. Izzy figures that if his computer and Etemon's Network have compatible systems, they'll be able to log on to the network. When Izzy does, they receive an e-mail requesting help.
They begin travelling looking for this person. During this, T.K.'s crest begins to glow and they find the Crest of Hope in the mountain's wall.
Entering the hole the crest left, they discover hieroglyphs like the ones they've encountered before. Fascinated, Izzy begins to understand the meaning behind everything.
Apparently, the digital world is a world that shadows the real world. It's a physical environment made up of the data passing through lines to computers in the real world. Everything in the digital world is made up of data. Since the digital world is connected directly to the real world, everything that happens here happens there.
Izzy figures that just by clicking on the e-mail address, he can transport them to the person's location by e-mailing them there as file attachments. When they get there, Tai spots Etemon.
They camp out for the night. Sora and Biyomon take on guard duty and lets Tai and Agumon take a rest. Sora tells Tai about how worried she is, not sure whether or not they should go. She also tells him about how she feels about how Izzy was saying that they were only little bits of data. Tai reassures her that everything will be alright and that it really is worth it.
In the morning, Sora has a talk with Izzy, who informs her that they're directly linked with themselves in the real world so that they have to be just as careful here as they were there. Tai, Izzy, Joe, Sora and their digimon decide to go into the pyramid. Izzy uses his computer as a map to find out how to get in. When they reach the pyramid's base, Etemon shows up, hearing the kids. They get through all right, but Tai sticks his hand out, teasing Etemon. Sora got angry at Tai's immaturity but Tai laughs it off.
They look for the weak points in the pyramid, and when they find another they spot Gazimon. Tai pokes one of the two Gazimon, making them get into a fight. Again, Tai thinks this is funny, but Sora becomes even more angry that Tai will only get them caught.
They come to a firewall, the pyramid's last line of defense. Cautious, Izzy slowly figures out where the weak point is. When he does, Tai slips through it easily and the others carefully follow.
Finally, they find the person they were looking for - Datamon. Tentomon tells them about how Datamon disappeared a few years ago and how no one ever knew what happened to him. Datamon then tells them the story about how he got into a fight with Etemon, who defeated him and forced him to act as a webmaster for his network. Over the years, Datamon slowly repaired himself and gained enough control over the network to cause problems for Etemon. Now he needed their help to finally get free.
Izzy follows the instructions Datamon transfers to his computer. Just as Tai was about to finish the process by pulling up the lever, Etemon comes and he knows everything that's been going on now by watching them on surveillance cameras.
The digimon digivolve and attack as Tai pulls up the lever. Datamon becomes free and aims shards of glass at the two Gazimon and Birdramon. Birdramon devolves to Biyomon, and Tai becomes angry at Datamon for hurting them. Etemon only smirks at him. He defends himself against Datamon as Datamon attacks.
Datamon falls but before they can stop him, he grabs Sora and Biyomon and takes them out. Etemon starts to chase after Datamon, but Greymon, Kabuterimon and Ikkakumon block his way. Tai, Izzy and Joe run after Sora.
They reach the firewall again. Tai quickly tries to figure out where the weak point is, but Izzy tells him to wait so he can log online first. Tai doesn't think that they have time for that and rushes to the firewall but Joe holds him back. Izzy realizes what Tai thinks and tells him that they aren't just in some computer game - if they get hurt here, they'll harm themselves in the real world.
Frozen with this new information, Tai stand shock-still, not being able to move. The wall blasts open and Agumon, Tentomon and Gomamon are thrown through, beaten by Etemon. Up from the ceiling, Garurumon and Togemon come and attack Etemon. Garurumon lets out a howling blaster and Togemon attacks with her needle spray. They escape, Matt pulling the frozen Tai to safety.
Lost in a Garurumon's blaster, Etemon realizes that they're all gone. Outside, Matt questions the crying Tai about why he didn't just go through the wall. Tears streaming down his cheeks, Tai tells them that he couldn't, he just couldn't. The others look at him mournfully.
"It's all my fault Sora!" he yells. "It's all my fault!"
